On Saturday (7/23), Roc Nation’s Team ROC and the United Justice Coalition hosted the first-ever, social justice summit at Center415 in New York City that included speaking appearances from San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, Yo Gotti, Charlamagne tha God, attorney Ben Crump, New York attorney general Letitia James, Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin, Dr. Bernice A. King, Ari Melber, Soledad O’Brien, and the families of Eric Garner, Botham Jean, Antwon Rose II and Terence Crutcher and many more.
A few highlights included:
Popovich made a surprise appearance at the summit to present an award to Innocence Project co-founder Barry Scheck to honor him for the Innocence Project program that exonerates the wrongly convicted.
Gotti participated in a panel that explored conditions of confinement with a specific focus on the inhumane and unconstitutional treatment of the incarcerated population in Parchman.
Charlamagne moderated a panel that examined the decriminalization of mental health.
The families of Eric Garner, Botham Jean, Antwon Rose II and Terence Crutcher spoke about how they channeled anger into advocacy after their loved ones were tragically shot and killed by police officers. They were accompanied by Ben Crump.
