We had the great pleasure of attending the premiere of the movie “For Colored Girls” on Tuesday in Midtown Atlanta. By far this movie was one of the most touching, heartfelt, and profound movies yet. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room as women viewed and shared the stories being told right before their eyes.

Tyler Perry did an extremely beautiful and magnificent job of bringing the collection of poems, written in 1975 by Ntozake Shange, to life. With one of the most talented casts in history, the actresses all delivered some of the most memorable performances ever seen on screen. Kimberly Elise, specifically, had one of the most touching stories and delivered her character’s story in such a heartfelt and passionate, to say the least, manner. Phylicia Rashad, of course one of the most talented African American actresses of all time, did not fail to deliver either. Loretta Divine, Kerry Washington, Thandie Newton, Janet Jackson, and Anika Noni Rose all gave legendary and memorable performances that were most award worthy. They all told the stories from the heart, no matter how big or small. The entire cast, Whoopi Goldberg, the young Tessa Thompson, Macy Gray, and all the men in the cast all did a wonderful job in bringing these stories to life.
The movie told the story of the lives of women of color. Although many women face issues in general, this movie told the story of a lifetime of the weight that the black woman carries on her shoulder on a daily basis. Whether they’ve shared their stories or not, this movie told it for them.

Lisa Luhren…

What an incredible movie! I truly felt the joys and pains of each character. Whether we’ve walked in their shoes or along side someone who has, For Colored Girls reminds us of the importance of sisterhood and the importance of judging less and loving more. For Colored Girls is the kind of movie that makes you want to become a better person for the sake of humanity. This movie is an amazing work of art that so passionately and vividly outlines the phenomenal strength of a black woman.
