Kenny Gallup Jr. returned a blocked PAT to bring Howard within two points in the final minute, and Dylan West sealed the game with a 37-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Bison a 32-31 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday night.
Adam Urena had thrown a 22-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Barmore with 41 seconds left, completing Mercyhurst’s comeback from an 18-point deficit to take a 31-26 lead. However, Derrick Brown Jr. blocked the PAT, and Gallup returned it the length of the field. West, who had missed two earlier attempts, delivered the game-winning kick after Ja’Shawn Scroggins powered the Bison downfield with runs of 15 and 26 yards, plus a 14-yard pass.
Scroggins threw for 157 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 122 yards. Jarett Hunter added 126 rushing yards and three touchdowns for Howard (1-1).
Urena finished with 225 passing yards and two touchdowns, both to Barmore.
