Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba featured for Miami in their match against Monterrey, who currently hold the second position in the Liga MX Clausura. Miami secured a 3-1 aggregate victory over MLS side FC Cincinnati to advance to the quarterfinals.
The home team, led by Tomás Avilés, took the lead in the first half from a corner kick, but Monterrey equalized through Maximiliano Meza shortly after Miami’s David Ruiz received his second yellow card and was sent off in the 65th minute.
Despite being down to ten men, Miami fought hard to maintain a draw. However, Rodriguez’s powerful shot from outside the box beat Drake Callender, securing a crucial away win for Monterrey. The teams will meet again for the second leg on April 10 in Mexico.
Reflecting on the match, Martino commented, “Considering the circumstances and the strength of our opponent, who fielded a full squad while we had key absences, I’m pleased with how we competed. We held our own, and upon reflection, we didn’t concede many scoring opportunities. The equalizing goal from a set piece was unfortunate, and Monterrey’s second goal demonstrated their quality and experience.”
