Fake’N It Till You Make It

Fake’n it till you make it

Atlanta….The city that many flock to after hearing the stories from friends and loved ones of all it has to offer. The African American transplants seem to flourish and enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, or so they think. The nightlife is full of glitz and glamour, cute girls and flashy men. But one thing is for sure, Atlanta has a great deal of fakers. Fakers that infiltrate the club scene and become part of an entourage that will help them be seen. The cars, clothes, and jewelry will help define them and guarantee them a spot on the VIP list. This is by no means a new epidemic in Atlanta. It has become increasingly noticeable in the last 5 years and has taken its toll on many a victim. This epidemic can become similar to a drug. There should be a Rehab Center for “Ballers Out of Control”. It will control your mind like cocaine, make you lose yourself like heroine and distort your sense of reality like crack.

I have been a victim of this “fake it till you make it” mentality. Recently, I was invited out to celebrate a milestone in my life. After dinner when the $20 check came my dinner date paid the bill. The waitress came back with a declined credit card. To avoid any further complications with the bill, I pulled out my card and paid. This really would not have been a big deal had my dinner partner not rolled off in a new 745 BMW. While driving off in my point A to point B car, I realized that this is another example of this disease. Some people are trying to keep up an image and compete with their neighbors. The sad part is the neighbor has a home for sale sign in front due to foreclosure. I am hoping what Seniac says on the topic is not the case, but she may be right. I’ll let her tell you.

Nevaeh.

“Men lie, women lie; but, numbers don’t.” Now that’s“REAL TALK”. The scenario Nevaeh described is the unfortunate reality of the ATL “frontin’ to be stuntin’” ever-present syndrome. (That phrase is free from me to you. No doubt you’ll use it frequently if you set foot in Atlanta’s web of deception.) So, you can peel off in a hot, new BMW but I have to pick up a $20 tab for your @$$. OUCH. That sounds like a joke. I’m resolved to believe the individual in this instance was hungry and invited Nevaeh out to eat on her dime. Yep. This is a classic example of a hustle NOT flowing.

All throughout Atlanta we witness heavy fakin’. By no means does this imply other cities don’t have fakers. Of course they do. That’s a given. However, the overabundance of material items for seemingly extravagant Atlanta dwellers is massive. (Key word here is “seemingly”.) In comparison to other cities, I’d say there’s an overdose of this drug at the epicenter of Atlanta’s lifeline. The heart of the ATL is now fueled by absolute fakers. Getting doped up and unable to come off of the “lie high”. Creating an impression for others that you “got it like that”. You got it alright. That social disease that’s infiltrated the ATL and appears to be unstoppable. You heard of the “American dream”, correct? Well, now you know the new term for the epidemic in Atlanta. It’s referred to as the “Atlanta Hallucination”. People are trying to fly high off of this one. Snap out of it and WAKE UP, fakers! The timer’s running out quickly, and I’ll tell you one thing you can be certain of given the current horrific state of our economy…a whole bunch of folk are about to be exposed. I hope people start readjusting their lifestyles to match living within their means. “Ain’t no future in frontin’”.

I don’t doubt one word of that article….just look at the spiritual leaders down there (Creflow, etc). Materialism has become a way of life for a lot of ppl. Another example is The Atlanta Housewives show…..daum near all of them are faking (getting evicted while renting their house, filing for bankruptcy, not claiming their grown kids, etc.)…just on a different level. Lol

I am a relative introvert when it comes on to the ATL night life where a lot of the fakers troll in order to be seen, heard and more oft than not, perpetrate. I belong in the almost 40 guild, settled & married with 2 beautiful children and work in corporate America. But let me add that the “frontin’ to be stuntin’” is by no means limited to the clubs. It’s in Corporate America, our schools (both witnessed in students and parents alike), our church’s, and our neighborhoods. This disease’s conniving tentacles have slinked, slithered & infiltrated every crevice of our society and infected each individual, young and old like a germ. I heard of a guy who lost his job, but couldn’t resist the temptation of purchasing a 52” Plasma on Black Friday, “because the ‘guys’ are going to trip when they see it.” WTF? Dude, you are trying to impress some other dudes and you do NOT have a j-o-b?!?! Some many things wrong with that picture on so many levels, but I digress. It’s just sad and absurd all at the same time, but in ATL, not surprising as “playas” succumb to status symbolism and as far I am concerned, their insecurities. Since Seniac loaned a signature quote, here’s mine: “Yuh waan play hero, yuh ah guh draw zero!” Walk good. Bless-ed.

Atlanta was not always this way! It is so sad to see that my beloved city has turned into a Hollywood of the South. To impress other people by purchasing material things is the craziest thing ever. Even though Ive returned to DC, a city that I ran from becasue of its materialistic ways, “growing up” in Atlanta allowed me to find myself and my since of style. Since returning back to the DC area, the materialism, has died down, but clearly it has shifted to Atlanta. Bring the Atlanta back of the 90’s!!!
