2024 marked the beginning of an incredible journey for me as a photographer. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work in Kingston, Jamaica, capturing the essence of the “Bob Marley One Love” event. This one-day assignment promised to be an adventure filled with excitement and cultural immersion.
My first stop was the Colin Smikle Plaque Ceremony at Trench Town Primary School. The ceremony was a momentous occasion, with a ribbon-cutting and the unveiling of the ‘Colin Smikle’ plaque for the new outdoor learning pavilion. It was a privilege to be present at this new school in Trenchtown, the very place where Bob Marley himself grew up. The event was graced by the presence of lead actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, actor James Norton, and Ziggy Marley, among others. I was honored to document this significant moment in the community’s history.
Next, I made my way to the premiere’s red carpet at Carib 5 Theatre. The atmosphere was electric, with fan activations, pre-party celebrations, and the arrival of local celebrities, government dignitaries, and influencers. As one of the main photographers on the red carpet, I found myself in the midst of all the action. It was an exhilarating experience to capture the essence of the evening, and the highlight was undoubtedly capturing photographs of Megan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry of Sussex. The red carpet was a whirlwind of excitement, far beyond what I had ever imagined. Seeing these moments on television is one thing, but being in the midst of it all was an absolute thrill.
Although my time in Jamaica was brief, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the vibrant culture that surrounded me. I yearned for more time to delve deeper into the community and experience the true gem that Jamaica has to offer. As a Getty photographer, I am fortunate to be able to do what I love, and this journey has only reinforced my passion. Exploring new places, meeting incredible people, and documenting unforgettable moments are what make this profession so fulfilling.
The “Bob Marley One Love” event was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I am grateful to have been a part of it. Beyond the glitz and glamour, it was the rich cultural tapestry of Jamaica that left a lasting impression on me. I look forward to embarking on more exciting journeys and capturing the beauty and essence of different places and events. As a photographer, I am constantly reminded of the wonders this world has to offer, and I am grateful for every opportunity to share these moments with others.
