‘Top Gun 3’ is in the Works at Paramount

Ehren Kruger, co-writer of Top Gun: Maverick, is crafting a script for a potential new installment, with director Joe Kosinski also slated to return. Sources indicate the aim is to bring together Tom Cruise with his next-gen co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell.

This news follows shortly after Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement of Cruise’s deal to star in and produce films for Warners, although the agreement is nonexclusive. Despite Cruise’s recent films primarily being with Paramount without an official deal, the Top Gun sequel has been quietly in development since late fall.

Top Gun: Maverick proved to be a box office sensation in 2022, raking in $1.5 billion globally. Steven Spielberg credited Cruise with revitalizing the theatrical business, which had suffered due to the pandemic. The sequel, coming decades after Tony Scott’s 1986 Top Gun, played a pivotal role in establishing Cruise as a burgeoning movie star.

While the new Top Gun 3 movie isn’t expected in the near future, as Cruise is currently immersed in the eighth Mission: Impossible installment set for release in May 2025, this development underscores Cruise’s enduring star power. Studios are poised to vie for his time and attention in the years to come, affirming his status as an in-demand actor.
