On August 18, Los Angeles witnessed a rare moment of unity as rival gangs came together in the streets of Compton, thanks to the efforts of Keenon Dequan Ray Jackson, better known as YG. The Compton-born rapper played a key role in bridging the divide between the Treetop Pirus and Fruit Town Pirus gangs by organizing a peaceful walk with members of both factions. The event saw participation from friends, family members, and children, turning the gathering into a community affair.
Compton has long held a significant place in hip-hop history, first gaining worldwide attention when five emerging artists released the groundbreaking and controversial track, “Fk tha Police.” This group, consisting of Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC Ren, formed N.W.A. (Ngas With Attitude), putting Compton on the map and influencing countless others who followed. The neighborhood has since produced a number of prominent figures, including The Game, Kendrick Lamar, and actor Anthony Anderson, who all hail from this iconic Los Angeles community.
