Tracy Chapman’s 1988 hit, ‘Fast Car,’ clinched the titles of Song and Single of the Year at the recent Country Music Association Awards. Despite its 35-year history, the song gained renewed recognition after Luke Combs released a cover version that soared to number two in the US and number 30 in the UK this summer.
This accolade holds special significance as it designates Chapman as the first Black songwriter to secure the Song of the Year honor in the award’s 57-year existence. Expressing her gratitude, Chapman remarked that the award was “truly an honor,” as reported by BBC.
In response, Combs acknowledged Chapman’s role in creating one of the greatest songs of all time, stating, “I just recorded it because I loved the song. It’s the first favorite song that I ever had, at 4 years old.”
Tracy Chapman’s original ‘Fast Car’ not only received the Song of the Year award but also earned her three Grammy Awards in 1989, including Best Female Pop Vocalist. Combs’ rendition of the song is anticipated to receive a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.
