KC Current and Gotham FC Battle to a Draw

Kansas City Current and NJ/NY Gotham FC played to a 1-1 draw in Saturday afternoon’s National Women’s Soccer League match at CPKC Stadium.

Both teams created early chances, with Kansas City forward Temwa Chawinga going 1-on-1 against defender Jess Carter in the fourth minute. Carter slowed Chawinga until teammate Tierna Davidson blocked the shot. Just two minutes later, a deflected shot fell to Gotham FC midfielder Rose Lavelle inside the box, but her volley was saved by the goalkeeper.

Gotham FC struck first in the 22nd minute when forward Yazmeen Ryan received the ball on the right wing, raced into the box, and delivered a cross near the post that deflected off a Current defender into the net.

Kansas City equalized in the 52nd minute as Chawinga broke free at midfield and finished the play with a goal.

Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made a crucial stop in the 60th minute, denying Current forward Bia Zaneratto’s near-post shot with a key kick save.
