Baylor freshman Connor Hawkins sealed a dramatic win with a 27-yard field goal in double overtime, lifting the Bears past 17th-ranked SMU, 48-45, on Saturday.
Quarterback Sawyer Robertson led the charge, throwing two of his four touchdowns in the final 5 ½ minutes of regulation to erase SMU’s late lead. Robertson finished 34-of-50 passing for 440 yards, while running back Bryson Washington added 115 rushing yards and two scores, including a 2-yard touchdown in the first overtime.
SMU had chances to escape with the win. Kicker Collin Rogers came up short on a 57-yard attempt at the end of regulation, then pushed a 38-yarder wide right on the opening possession of the second overtime.
Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings was spectacular in defeat, throwing for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Jennings connected with Romello Brinson on two scores—one from 75 yards on the game’s opening play and a 25-yarder in overtime. He also hit freshman Jalen Cooper for a 75-yard strike late in the second quarter.
Though the schools are separated by just 100 miles, this was only their seventh meeting since the Southwest Conference dissolved in 1995—and their first clash since 2016. Baylor extended its dominance in the rivalry, securing its 14th straight win over SMU dating back to 1986.
