Charlotte FC looked poised to celebrate a winning return from the FIFA World Cup break, but a second-half surge from Atlanta United spoiled the party as the Eastern Conference rivals played to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night.
The Crown controlled much of the opening 45 minutes, taking a deserved two-goal advantage into halftime before Atlanta responded with a pair of second-half strikes to earn a share of the points.
Charlotte opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Kerwin Vargas, who finished off a fast-paced counterattack. Following a timely defensive clearance, Liel Abada quickly pushed the attack forward before finding Archie Goodwin inside the box. Although Goodwin’s initial effort was denied, Vargas reacted first to the rebound and calmly slotted home the opener.
The home side doubled its advantage later in the first half thanks to an impressive combination between Pep Biel and Abada. Biel delivered a perfectly weighted pass from just outside the penalty area, and Abada rose to meet it with a powerful header that left the Atlanta goalkeeper with no chance.
Charlotte nearly carried its momentum into the locker room thanks to goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina, who produced a spectacular save deep into first-half stoppage time to preserve the two-goal cushion.
The match, however, shifted dramatically after the restart.
Atlanta United came out with renewed energy and found a breakthrough in the 57th minute when Elías Báez headed home to cut the deficit in half and inject life into the visitors.
The pressure continued to build, and Atlanta eventually found its equalizer in the 77th minute through former MLS MVP Miguel Almirón, whose finish capped off the comeback and silenced the home crowd.
Charlotte pushed for a dramatic winner during an extended period of stoppage time. The closest opportunity came in the 99th minute when Idan Toklomati rose for a header inside the penalty area, but his effort drifted just wide of the post, ending the hosts’ hopes of claiming all three points.
While Charlotte will be disappointed after surrendering a two-goal lead, there were encouraging signs in the club’s first match back from the World Cup pause. The attack created quality chances throughout the first half, and the connection between Vargas, Abada and Biel offered a glimpse of the offensive firepower the club hopes to carry into the second half of the MLS season.
Charlotte FC won’t have to wait long for another opportunity to bounce back. The Crown returns to action Saturday when it travels to Sports Illustrated Stadium to face the New York Red Bulls in another important Eastern Conference matchup.
