Club América made history Thursday night, opening its Leagues Cup campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over San Diego in the first-ever tournament match played at Estadio Banorte.
Las Águilas wasted little time taking control of the historic occasion, scoring three times before halftime behind a sensational performance from Brian Rodríguez. The Uruguayan forward opened the scoring with a brilliant individual effort before setting up Érick Sánchez and Isaías Violante as América built a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
Rodríguez was the standout performer throughout the night, constantly creating problems for the San Diego defense and playing a direct role in all three of América’s first-half goals.
San Diego responded after halftime and pulled one back through Luca Bombino, but the comeback never materialized. América’s early advantage proved too much to overcome as the Liga MX side controlled the remainder of the match and comfortably secured the victory.
The result was only part of the night’s significance. Estadio Banorte, one of the most historic stadiums in world football, hosted a Leagues Cup match for the first time. The venue is the only stadium to have hosted three FIFA World Cup opening matches and two World Cup finals, adding another notable chapter to its storied history.
América’s victory also made Las Águilas the second Liga MX club to win a Leagues Cup match on home soil. Toluca FC accomplished the feat one night earlier with a dominant victory over the Seattle Sounders at Estadio Nemesio Diez.
With three points secured, América has taken an important step toward earning one of Liga MX’s four spots in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. More importantly, Las Águilas celebrated a historic night in front of a packed home crowd, combining a dominant performance with a memorable moment for the tournament.
