Club América opened the new Liga MX Femenil season with a statement victory, defeating Tigres in a dramatic penalty shootout to capture the Campeón de Campeonas title after the match remained deadlocked through regulation and stoppage time.
With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the championship was decided from the penalty spot. América goalkeeper Natalia Velasco quickly became the hero, denying Tigres’ opening attempt from Lizbeth Ovalle Ordoñez to give Las Águilas an early advantage.
América converted each of its first four penalties through Kiana Palacios Guerrero, Scarlett Camberos, Gaby García, and Nancy Antonio, while Tigres stayed alive thanks to successful finishes from María Sánchez, Jheniffer, and Mariza.
The decisive moment came with Tigres’ final attempt. Veteran Stephany Mayor needed to score to extend the shootout, but Velasco stood tall once again, making her second save of the night to seal the victory and the trophy for América.
Velasco’s outstanding performance in the shootout proved to be the difference, reinforcing her reputation as one of Liga MX Femenil’s top penalty specialists. The championship gives Club América an early piece of silverware and sends a strong message to the rest of the league that Las Águilas remain one of the favorites to compete for every trophy this season.
