The Georgetown University women’s basketball team fell to No. 1 UConn, 83–42, Thursday night in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at CareFirst Arena. The loss drops the Hoyas to 11–8 overall and 4–6 in league play, while the defending powerhouse Huskies remained unbeaten at 20–0 and 10–0 in conference action.
UConn set the tone early, opening the game on an 18–2 run over the first seven minutes. Georgetown responded late in the first quarter, using an 8–0 run sparked by free throws from junior Khia Miller to cut the deficit to 20–10 after one.
The Huskies again surged to begin the second quarter, stretching the lead to as many as 29 points. Georgetown briefly found momentum behind a jumper from sophomore Summer Davis and a traditional three-point play by graduate student Brianna Scott, but UConn quickly answered. Scott’s second three-point play at the buzzer sent the Hoyas into halftime trailing 51–20.
Offense was hard to come by for both teams in the third quarter before Georgetown put together an 8–2 run, initiated by a layup from sophomore Destiny Agubata. UConn responded once more to maintain control, taking a 60–28 lead into the final period.
The Hoyas continued to compete in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit late, but were unable to overcome the early runs, as UConn closed out the 83–42 victory.
Scott led Georgetown with eight points, while Agubata recorded a game-high nine rebounds and added six points. Despite the score, Georgetown won the rebounding battle 36–32 and forced 15 turnovers, including eight steals. The Hoyas struggled shooting the ball, finishing at 28.6 percent from the field, while UConn shot 51.6 percent.
Head coach Darnell Haney acknowledged the challenge of facing the nation’s top-ranked team, noting the importance of learning from the performance and quickly turning attention to the next contest as the first half of BIG EAST play comes to a close.
