The University of Houston women’s soccer team kicked off a new chapter in style, earning a commanding 4-0 win over St. Mary’s (TX) on Sunday evening at the Carl Lewis International Complex. The victory marked the first of the Ben Williams era.
The Cougars wasted no time setting the tone. In the 11th minute, junior midfielder Ava Shannon capitalized on a long bounce from a free kick to open the scoring. Just a minute later, junior forward Adelhia Ghonda doubled the lead after beating the goalkeeper in a one-on-one chance.
Houston’s pressure continued, and in the 35th minute junior forward Jocelyn Chinea wrapped a shot around a defender and into the back of the net, giving the Cougars a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
The finishing touch came in the 89th minute when Shannon’s strike deflected off a defender, falling perfectly for sophomore midfielder Casey Maddox. She converted with one touch for her first career goal, sealing the dominant performance.
Up Next: Houston will look to carry the momentum into Thursday’s non-conference matchup against Sam Houston at 7:30 p.m. at Pritchett Field in Huntsville, Texas.
