The Georgetown University women’s basketball team delivered a dominant defensive performance Tuesday night, defeating St. John’s 59-34 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. The win marked the Hoyas’ most impressive defensive outing of the season and improved Georgetown to 10-7 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Coming off a tough road loss at DePaul, Georgetown responded with intensity from the opening tip. Sophomore Destiny Agubata and graduate student Chetanna Nweke jump-started the offense, combining for the Hoyas’ first nine points. Stifling defense and an 11-0 first-quarter run—sparked by eight points from graduate student Laila Jewett—helped GU build a 20-8 lead after one.
Georgetown maintained control throughout the second quarter, taking a 34-19 advantage into halftime. After St. John’s briefly cut the deficit to 11 midway through the third, the Hoyas shut the door. A Cristen Carter layup ignited an 11-0 run that pushed the lead to 47-25 heading into the final period. Jewett opened the fourth with a three-pointer as Georgetown continued to dominate defensively and on the glass, leading by as many as 30 en route to the 25-point victory.
Agubata led the Hoyas for the second straight game with 15 points, four assists, and a steal, while Jewett added 13 points. Junior Brianna Byars contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and an assist, anchoring Georgetown’s effort on the boards. The Blue & Gray outrebounded the Red Storm 40-26, including a decisive 15-6 edge on the offensive glass, and forced 18 turnovers.
Georgetown held St. John’s to just 28.6 percent shooting, the lowest opponent point total allowed by the Hoyas this season and the fewest against a Division I opponent since 2018.
Head coach Darnell Haney praised his team’s response, saying the group “came out ready,” executed the game plan, and played aggressively from start to finish.
The Hoyas return to the road on Saturday for a BIG EAST showdown against Marquette at the Al McGuire Center. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. ET and the game will air live on ESPN+.
