Johnson’s Dual TDs, Medlock’s Pick-6 Power SMU Past Stanford, 34-10

Chris Johnson Jr. delivered two electric touchdowns — an 87-yard sprint and a 42-yard catch-and-run — to help SMU roll past Stanford 34–10 on Saturday.

Johnson’s first TD came on a breakaway run, and his second followed a slick escape by QB Kevin Jennings, who avoided pressure and found Johnson wide open before he weaved through defenders to score. Jennings finished 22 of 30 for 247 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Justin Medlock sealed the win with a 96-yard interception return in the fourth quarter, pushing SMU to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in ACC play. It marked the Mustangs’ 19th straight regular-season conference win and kept their perfect ACC regular-season record intact at 10-0 since rejoining a power conference in 2024.

Stanford (2-4, 1-2) briefly cut into the lead with a 4-play, 75-yard drive in the final seconds of the first half, capped by a 14-yard TD pass from Ben Gulbranson to CJ Williams, making it 17-7 at halftime. But Gulbranson’s fourth-quarter interception — returned untouched by Medlock — ended the Cardinal’s comeback hopes. Gulbranson threw for 278 yards but was sacked six times under relentless SMU pressure.

A scary moment occurred early when Stanford cornerback Aaron Morris was immobilized and taken off the field in an ambulance after tackling SMU’s Jordan Hudson. He later cleared precautionary tests and rejoined the team before the end of the game.
