Kansas City Current delivered one of their most complete performances of the season Wednesday night, overwhelming Racing Louisville FC 5-1 at CPKC Stadium behind braces from Debinha and Haley Hopkins.
The victory not only extended the Current’s league-record home unbeaten streak to 25 matches, but also marked the fourth time Kansas City has scored five goals in an NWSL regular-season match at CPKC Stadium.
The Current wasted little time taking control. Haley Hopkins opened the scoring in the fifth minute, pouncing on a rebound after Lo’eau LaBonta’s initial effort was saved. Just 10 minutes later, Brazilian star Debinha doubled the advantage with a spectacular acrobatic finish before Amelia White capped the explosive opening 20 minutes with her first career NWSL regular-season goal. The rookie raced onto a perfectly weighted pass from Croix Bethune and calmly slotted home to give Kansas City a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.
Bethune’s assist was her seventh of the season, setting a new Kansas City single-season club record while moving her into a tie for the league lead.
Kansas City showed no signs of slowing after the break. Hopkins completed the first brace of her NWSL career in the 48th minute by finishing another rebound inside the six-yard box before Debinha added her second goal just four minutes later, finishing off a flowing team move orchestrated by Bayley Feist.
Debinha’s two-goal performance carried added historical significance. The Brazilian now has 82 career NWSL goals across all competitions, tying the league’s all-time scoring record. She also recorded the 20th game-winning goal of her illustrious career, becoming just the third player in league history to reach that milestone.
Louisville managed a late consolation goal from the penalty spot in the 81st minute, but the result was never in doubt as Kansas City’s relentless attack proved too much throughout the night.
The victory also featured several milestone performances. Vanessa DiBernardo became just the fourth player in NWSL history to record 100 career regular-season victories, while defender Kolo Suliafu made her NWSL debut after entering in the second half.
