Lady Mustangs Close Non-Conference Play with Strong Home Win

SMU women’s basketball wrapped up non-conference play with a 74–62 victory over Southern on Sunday inside Moody Coliseum, using defensive pressure and timely scoring to secure the win.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early double-digit lead by forcing turnovers and controlling the pace. Southern made a late push, cutting the lead to single digits in the fourth quarter, but SMU responded with clutch baskets from Paulina Paris, Zahra King, and Jzaniya Harriel, who combined for 26 second-half points to close the door.

SMU shot efficiently on the day, knocking down nine three-pointers, shooting 42% from the field, and converting 17-of-25 free throws. The Mustangs dominated defensively, forcing 21 turnovers, tying a season high with 16 steals, and allowing no fast-break points.

Paulina Paris led all scorers with 18 points, marking her second straight game at that mark. Kyla Deck provided a huge spark early, scoring 13 first-half points and recording seven steals before exiting in the third quarter. Jzaniya Harriel added 13 points and three assists, while Zahra King finished with 12 points, nine of them coming in the second half.

With the win, SMU continues its momentum, claiming its fifth victory in the last six games as the Mustangs prepare to open ACC play on the road.
