St. Louis City SC came up short in a back-and-forth battle Saturday night, falling 3-2 to San Jose Earthquakes at Energizer Park.
Despite controlling the tempo early and outshooting San Jose 13-4 in the first half, St. Louis trailed at the break after Preston Judd struck in the 8th minute. CITY SC responded quickly after halftime, flipping the match with back-to-back goals from Sergio Córdova—his first for the club—and Marcel Hartel, who notched his third of the season.
But the Earthquakes had the final say. Timo Werner delivered the decisive blow, converting a penalty in the 69th minute before adding the match-winner in the 83rd to complete his brace. St. Louis once again finished with the edge in shots, but couldn’t capitalize when it mattered most.
CITY SC now shifts focus to a Round of 16 matchup in the U.S. Open Cup against Chicago Fire FC, before returning to league play against Austin FC.
