If you want to be mind-blown by science and entertained with unexpected humor and ingenuity, then The Martian is a movie you will want to see. The movie sets place on Mars, where astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, is struck by debris, left behind and presumed dead by his crew during a manned mission.

This life-altering accident has placed Mark Watney in a situation where surviving seems impossible. With very little resources, a few supplies and his ability to “science the shit out of this,” Mark Watney has to find a way to survive on this hostile martian planet and he has to find a way to communicate with earth to let them know he’s still alive.

I think The Martian is an intelligent, problem-solving movie that conveys a very powerful message of survival. It reminded me of the movie Cast Away starring Tom Hanks, except this movie has a lot of wit, science, humor and lots of cool graphics. I’d take two hours of Matt Damon over Tom Hanks any day.

The Martian is definitely a crowd pleaser. You will feel sadness, and hopelessness and just when you thought it was over, it isn’t and his resilience prevails. This movie needs to be seen at the movies and in 3D.

Quite honestly, it made me wish I had paid closer attention in science and chemistry class.

If you’re looking to do something this weekend, then you should head out to the movies to see The Martian. It’s definitely worth a date night.
The Martian hits theaters Friday Oct. 2
