The SMU Mustangs overcame a sluggish opening to secure a 69–58 win over the Texas A&M–Corpus Christi Islanders on Nov. 6 at Moody Coliseum. Entering the matchup favored by 23 points, SMU needed time to find its rhythm.
After senior forward Corey Washington scored the first basket of the night, the Mustangs struggled to connect, surrendering the lead for most of the first half. SMU didn’t pull back ahead until the final four minutes before the break. The defense, however, locked in—holding the Islanders scoreless for seven straight minutes until a late 3-pointer from junior guard Daniel Michelini-Jackson cut into the gap just before halftime.
The second half was a different story. SMU controlled the pace from the start, though the Islanders briefly threatened with a surge that cut the lead to 50–48 around the six-minute mark. Head Coach Andy Enfield quickly called timeout, giving his squad a chance to reset.
Out of that huddle, senior point guard Boopie Miller took over. Miller sparked the offense with assertive drives, free throws, rebounds, and a series of timely assists. With Washington and Jaron Pierre Jr. adding key baskets, the Mustangs rebuilt their cushion and pulled away for good.
Freshman center Samet Yiğitoğlu delivered one of the night’s standout performances, collecting his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Miller led the team with 14 points and six assists, showcasing exceptional composure by playing over 30 minutes without committing a single turnover.
SMU now turns its attention to its next home matchup on Nov. 11, when the Mustangs look to extend their win streak against Murray State.
