The Washington Mystics fought hard but came up short in a 93-86 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday night, despite strong performances from Brittney Sykes (18 points) and Shakira Austin (17 points). After opening the game with a dominant 18-3 run, the Mystics were held to just nine points in the second quarter but kept it close throughout, tying the game at 67-all heading into the fourth thanks to a buzzer-beating layup by Sykes.
Dearica Hamby’s 24-point, 14-rebound night and Rickea Jackson’s second-half surge (20 of her 22 points after halftime) fueled the Sparks’ late push. The Mystics stayed within striking distance until a late 9-0 Los Angeles run created separation. Kelsey Plum hit a deep three with under a minute to go to seal the Sparks’ third straight win.
Washington, now 11-12, will look to bounce back from the post-All-Star stretch and continue building momentum as the season progresses.
