Despite entering Leagues Cup as the only unbeaten team at home in Major League Soccer this season, Nashville SC couldn’t extend that success against Liga MX competition on Wednesday night, falling 1-0 to Club León at GEODIS Park.
The Boys in Gold remain one of MLS’ top teams with a 12-2-4 record and an impressive 8-0-1 mark at home in league play. However, their struggles against Mexican opposition continued, dropping to 0-2-1 against Liga MX clubs this year after earlier Concacaf Champions Cup results against Tigres UANL and Club América.
With several key players sidelined by injury and a demanding stretch of four matches in 15 days, head coach B.J. Callaghan opted for a heavily rotated lineup. Nashville’s starting XI averaged just 24.3 years of age, making it the youngest lineup in club history.
The hosts weathered an early scare in the 14th minute when defender Thomas Williams cleared a shot off the goal line after goalkeeper Xavier Valdez had been beaten. Nashville nearly found the breakthrough in the 70th minute after substitute Sam Surridge powered a header toward goal, but León goalkeeper Oscar García produced a diving save to preserve the deadlock.
The decisive moment arrived in the 79th minute when Sebastián Santos capitalized on a loose ball at the top of the penalty area before setting up Daniel Arcilla, who finished from close range for the match’s only goal.
Callaghan turned to several regular starters in the second half, including Surridge, Eddi Tagseth, Andy Najar, and Daniel Lovitz, but Nashville was unable to find an equalizer before the final whistle.
The defeat drops Nashville SC to 2-2-1 across all competitions since returning from the World Cup break. The club has scored just four goals during that stretch and has now been held scoreless twice.
