Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, saw their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign come to a heartbreaking end Sunday, falling 1-0 to Colombia in the quarterfinals at Władysław Król Municipal Stadium in Łódź, Poland.
The Falconets controlled much of the match and created the better statistical profile, but their inability to capitalize on their opportunities ultimately proved costly. Colombia delivered the decisive blow deep into stoppage time, securing a place in the semifinals.
Nigeria finished the match with 58 percent possession and registered 14 shots compared with just five for Colombia. Despite that attacking advantage, the Falconets were unable to find the breakthrough.
The match took another turn in the 76th minute when Nigeria’s Kafayat Mafisere was shown a straight red card for foul play, leaving the Falconets with 10 players for the closing stages.
Colombia immediately increased the pressure and continued searching for an opening. Their persistence finally paid off in the second minute of added time.
Valerin Loboa raced onto a through ball from midfield and attempted to beat Nigerian goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma. Uzoma made the initial save, but Loboa reacted quickest to the rebound, poking the ball into the net to give Colombia a dramatic 1-0 lead.
Nigeria pushed forward in the final moments in search of an equalizer, but Colombia held its shape and defended the advantage to book its place in the last four.
The loss brings an end to an impressive tournament run for the Falconets, who delivered one of the knockout stage’s biggest results with a commanding 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16.
Nigeria opened the tournament with a dominant 10-1 victory over New Caledonia before playing China to a scoreless draw. The Falconets then suffered a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their final group-stage match.
Colombia also navigated a challenging path to the quarterfinals. The South Americans advanced past host nation Poland with a 1-0 victory in the Round of 16 after finishing the group stage with a 0-0 draw against Portugal, a 3-1 win over Costa Rica and a 3-0 loss to defending champions North Korea.
Colombia will now face the winner of the quarterfinal between defending champion North Korea and Canada for a place in the final.
The other semifinal will feature Spain against Italy.
The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which began September 5 in Poland, concludes September 27.
