HOUSTON, TX (November 2, 2026) – The No. 10 Houston Cougars wasted little time reminding the college basketball world why they’re among the nation’s top programs, opening the 2026-27 season with a commanding 94-55 victory over La Salle on Monday night at Fertitta Center. Houston set the tone early with relentless defensive pressure, a dominant presence in the paint, and a balanced offensive attack that overwhelmed the visiting Explorers.
Senior guard Dedan Thomas Jr. led the Cougars with 16 points, while Corey Hadnot II contributed 14 and Delrecco Gillespie added 13, including 11 in the first half. Chase McCarty provided an early spark with 10 first-half points, helping Houston build a comfortable 43-23 halftime advantage. Freshman center Arafan Diane also chipped in 10 points as Houston showcased its depth in the season-opening victory.
The Cougars jumped out to a blistering 20-3 lead midway through the first half, immediately putting La Salle on its heels. Although the Explorers briefly responded with an 8-0 run, Houston quickly regained control and never allowed the visitors to seriously threaten. The Cougars shot an impressive 54% from the field, dominated the glass with a 47-32 rebounding advantage, and completely controlled the interior, outscoring La Salle 44-10 in the paint. Houston’s defense was equally impressive, forcing 19 turnovers and converting those mistakes into 25 points.
La Salle struggled to find its offensive rhythm against Houston’s aggressive defense, shooting just 25% from the field and connecting on only eight of its 39 three-point attempts. Kam Burton led the Explorers with 15 points, while Devin Booker added 12. The physical contest featured 46 combined fouls, but Houston’s ability to dictate the tempo and capitalize on opportunities proved to be the difference.
With the convincing victory, Houston begins its season 1-0, delivering an early statement that the Cougars remain a force to be reckoned with in college basketball. The performance offered a glimpse of the team’s depth, defensive intensity, and offensive potential as Houston looks to build momentum heading into another highly anticipated season.
