Prairie View A&M University had plenty to celebrate during its historic 150th anniversary Homecoming weekend, and the Panthers made sure the celebration included a victory on the football field.
In front of a Homecoming crowd at Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field, Prairie View A&M survived a furious comeback by Alcorn State to secure a thrilling 41-38 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers appeared to be in control early, jumping out to a 21-7 first-quarter lead behind quarterback Tevin Carter, who accounted for four touchdowns, including two through the air and two on the ground. But Alcorn State refused to go away, turning the afternoon into a back-and-forth offensive battle.
Braves quarterback Jaylon Tolbert delivered an impressive performance, throwing for 356 yards and five touchdowns, including three scoring passes to Fredrick Robertson. Alcorn erased multiple 14-point deficits and eventually took a 35-31 lead in the third quarter, threatening to spoil Prairie View’s milestone Homecoming celebration.
The Panthers answered in the fourth quarter when Carter capped a 91-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run, putting Prairie View back in front 38-35. Alcorn responded with a field goal to tie the game at 38 with just over seven minutes remaining.
With the game hanging in the balance, Prairie View put together a crucial fourth-quarter drive that set up kicker Ethan Eddins for a 37-yard field goal with 1:56 left on the clock. Eddins delivered, giving the Panthers a 41-38 advantage.
Alcorn had one final opportunity to steal the victory, but Prairie View’s defense came up with the stops it needed, forcing four consecutive incompletions to end the Braves’ final possession and preserve the win.
Despite being outgained 505-397 in total offense, Prairie View found a way to finish, rushing for 235 yards and making the key plays when they mattered most.
The victory snapped the Panthers’ two-game conference losing streak and improved their record to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in SWAC play. Alcorn State fell to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
While the defensive performance left room for improvement, the Panthers showed resilience in a game that featured multiple lead changes, explosive plays and plenty of late-game drama.
The victory carried additional significance as Prairie View A&M celebrated 150 years of history, tradition and excellence. With alumni, students and supporters coming together for the university’s milestone Homecoming festivities, the Panthers delivered a memorable finish to an already special weekend.
For Prairie View A&M, it wasn’t always pretty, but on a weekend celebrating a century and a half of Panther pride, the only thing that mattered was finding a way to win.
