SMU delivered a statement win on Saturday, defeating No. 12 North Carolina 97–83 and earning its first victory over a ranked opponent under second-year head coach Andy Enfield.
Boopie Miller led the way with a standout performance, recording 27 points and 12 assists. Corey Washington added 23 points, while B.J. Edwards chipped in 15 points and six assists as the Mustangs improved to 12–2 in their second season competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
After holding a nine-point lead on three separate occasions in the first half, SMU entered halftime tied but took full control after the break and never looked back. The Mustangs shot an impressive 60% from the field and 52% from beyond the arc, showcasing an efficient and confident offensive performance.
Washington ignited the second half with nine of SMU’s first 11 points, including two clutch three-pointers that broke a 47–47 tie and gave the Mustangs a lead they would not surrender. Miller continued the momentum with a highlight-reel step-back three in front of the SMU bench, punctuating his near-flawless night shooting 10 of 13 from the floor.
North Carolina, which entered the game with its best start in over 15 years, was led by Seth Trimble’s 22 points, with additional contributions from Henri Veesaar and freshman Caleb Wilson.
The victory marked SMU’s first win over a ranked opponent since February 2022 and set the tone for conference play as the Mustangs open ACC competition with confidence.
