Stokes accounts for five touchdowns as Memphis rolls past Army 49-22

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Marcus Stokes threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score as Memphis defeated Army 49-22 on Saturday night at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

Jermane Hayes and Jemyri Davis each caught two touchdown passes for the Tigers (7-2, 4-1 American Athletic Conference), who scored four first-half touchdowns and continued pulling away after halftime.

Jaylin Carter added two rushing touchdowns and finished with 96 yards on 23 carries. Army fell to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Memphis built its first-half advantage behind a short touchdown run by Carter, two scoring passes from Stokes to Hayes and another to Davis. The Tigers held Army scoreless on four of its six possessions before halftime.

Stokes connected with Davis again in the third quarter to extend the lead to 35-14. Rushing touchdowns by Stokes and Carter during the final six minutes of the quarter pushed Memphis’ total to 49 points.

Stokes matched his career high with 29 completions and became the first Memphis quarterback since Seth Henigan in 2023 to pass for at least 200 yards in three consecutive games. He also became the program’s first quarterback since 2000 to account for five touchdowns in consecutive games.

The Tigers spread the production across their receiving corps. Hayes, Hunter Tipton and Stonka Burnside each had at least five catches, while Hayes, Tipton and Davis each finished with at least 75 receiving yards.

Carter recorded his third career game with multiple touchdowns. Memphis gained at least 100 yards in every quarter and committed just two penalties, its fewest since the 2024 Frisco Bowl against West Virginia.

Chauncey Logan Jr. and Ellis Ellis Jr. each intercepted a pass for the second consecutive game. Ellis’ interception came on the final play, matching his finish from the previous game.

Mike Montgomery led Memphis with nine tackles. Ellis had seven, and Dylan Smith and Kadan Spratling added six apiece. Joseph Head Jr. recorded the Tigers’ only sack and tackle for loss in the fourth quarter.

Memphis limited Army to 45 passing yards, the fewest it has allowed since holding Bethune-Cookman to 39 in 2023. The Tigers have forced 75 turnovers across their past 41 games, recording at least one takeaway in 33 of those contests.

The 49 points were Memphis’ most against a service academy, surpassing the 44 it scored against Navy in 2024. The Tigers also extended their streak of scoring at least 15 points at home to 91 games.

Memphis has an open week before visiting South Florida on Nov. 12. The Thursday game is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST on ESPN.

The Bulls (6-2, 2-2) visit East Carolina before hosting the Tigers.
