NASHVILLE, TN (November 5, 2026) – It was an unforgettable evening celebrating music, culture, and history as legendary producer and New Jack Swing pioneer Teddy Riley received a Lifetime Achievement Award during Fisk University‘s 2026 Gold & Blue Jubilee Honors Celebration at the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville.
Hosted by the Fisk University Alumni Association and the Fisk Jubilee Singers Alumni Association, the annual celebration brought together music lovers, alumni, and industry professionals to recognize Riley’s extraordinary contributions to the entertainment industry. Known as the architect of New Jack Swing, Riley helped revolutionize R&B and hip-hop by blending soulful melodies with hard-hitting rhythms, creating a signature sound that defined a generation and continues to influence today’s artists.
The evening featured powerful performances from the world renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers, whose rich musical heritage provided a fitting tribute to an artist who has spent decades shaping the sound of popular music. One of the night’s most memorable moments came when Riley, visibly moved by the performances, joined the legendary ensemble in song, creating a special connection between two generations of musical excellence.
Adding to the celebration was Basic Black, the band whose early musical journey included serving as the live backing band for New Jack Swing pioneers Guy. The group took the audience on a musical journey through Riley’s remarkable catalog, revisiting the sounds and songs that helped establish him as one of the most influential producers in modern music history. From his groundbreaking work with Guy and Keith Sweat to his contributions to the careers of Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, and Blackstreet, the tribute highlighted the extraordinary reach of Riley’s musical legacy.
Keeping the energy flowing throughout the evening was Nashville’s own DJ C-Wiz, who provided the soundtrack between performances and presentations. His selections kept guests entertained and the atmosphere lively, helping make the celebration feel like both a prestigious awards ceremony and a musical homecoming.
This year’s celebration, themed “The Architect of Sound, Strategy & Legacy,” was especially meaningful as it took place during Fisk University’s Homecoming festivities. Beyond recognizing Riley’s accomplishments, the event supported Fisk University students and the Fisk Jubilee Singers Endowment Fund, helping preserve the institution’s rich musical heritage for future generations.
For Riley, whose influence spans decades and genres, the Lifetime Achievement Award was more than another honor. It represented recognition from a historic institution whose musical legacy has played an important role in American culture.
