The Root 100 Gala once again set the stage for an extraordinary evening celebrating the crème de la crème of Black achievement and influence, bringing together some of the most iconic figures across various sectors.
Hosted at the historic Gotham Hall in New York City, the night was filled with inspiration, entertainment, and unforgettable moments. This year’s event, presented by Martell, produced by The Captivate Group, with publicity by Schure Media Group, marked a pivotal moment in the celebration of Black culture, leadership, and progress. The 2025 Root Gala also served as the official reintroduction of The Root under the new publisher, Ashley Allison, founder & CEO of Watering Hole Media. From the stage, Ashley challenged the room with a simple yet profound question: “What is your assignment in these times, and how will you show up?” She called for a shift from competition to collaboration, urging the community to come together, support one another, and stand with The Root as it steps boldly into its next chapter.
To reinforce that sentiment this year, she removed the traditional Root 100 rankings.
“My intention with the 2025 Root Celebration was to create a space where everyone, regardless of their background or status, could intermingle, dance, network, and connect,” shared Allison. “This shift is a reflection of the direction I’m taking for The Root, one that prioritizes inclusivity, culture, collaboration, and community. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for The Root! We aim to honor the diversity of thought, talent, and influence that exists within our culture.”
The evening, beginning with the red carpet hosted by Kela Walker, was an eclectic fusion of entertainment and advocacy, spotlighting The Root 100 honorees, individuals whose groundbreaking work across arts & entertainment, business, activism, media, science, technology, social justice, politics, culture, philanthropy, and sports continues to make a profound impact. Highlights of the evening included a series of powerful video montages that traced the rich history of The Root and its role in shaping the cultural conversation. Speakers reflected on the rising tide of censorship and the mounting attacks on journalism, underscoring why independent media remains not just relevant, but essential.
Comedian/actress Joyelle Nicole Johnson hosted the 2025 Root 100 Celebration. Guests were treated to a surprise performance from honoree 803 Fresh (Douglas Furtick), the artist behind the hit of the year, “Boots On The Ground,” and a special performance by hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh and DJ Aktive, who kept the dance floor full throughout the evening.
