Toluca didn’t just advance. Los Diablos took control.
With a vocal contingent of Toluca supporters turning the neutral setting into something resembling a home match, Antonio Mohamed’s side imposed its style on Austin FC from the opening whistle and walked away with a convincing 2-0 victory to book a place in the Leagues Cup semifinals.
The reward is an all-Liga MX showdown with León.
Toluca’s high press immediately put Austin under pressure, forcing the MLS club into uncomfortable situations and limiting its ability to build out of the back. Once Austin was reduced to 10 men, the balance of the match tilted even further toward the Mexican side.
Helinho opened the scoring from the penalty spot, showing patience before sending his effort across goal and beyond Brad Stuver. The goal gave Toluca the breakthrough it had been pushing for and sent its supporters into celebration.
Then came the turning point.
Joseph Rosales was initially shown a yellow card after a late challenge on Federico Pereira, but VAR intervened. After reviewing the play, referee Filip Dujic overturned the original decision and produced a red card, leaving Austin to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
From there, Toluca smelled blood.
The Diablos continued to press forward, using the extra space and numerical advantage to dictate the tempo. Austin struggled to generate consistent attacking opportunities, while Toluca remained disciplined and dangerous in possession.
Austin’s night went from difficult to nearly impossible in the second half when Ilie Sánchez was sent off for dissent, leaving the club with nine players.
Toluca eventually found its second goal through Jorge Díaz-Price, putting the result firmly out of reach and sending the Mexican club into the final four.
But the night wasn’t without controversy.
During the match, Toluca supporters were heard directing a homophobic slur toward Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver on multiple occasions. The chants were reported in both halves, with no apparent intervention from the referee or the stadium’s public-address system.
On the field, however, Toluca remained in command.
The result continues a strong Leagues Cup run for Mohamed’s squad and makes Los Diablos the third Liga MX club to reach the semifinal stage.
Now comes León.
With a place in the final on the line, Toluca will face another Liga MX opponent in what promises to be a very different test. After handling Austin’s pressure and taking advantage of its numerical superiority, the Diablos will need to find another gear against a León side that has also made its way through the tournament’s knockout rounds.
For Austin FC, the Leagues Cup run ends with frustration. The club never found an answer to Toluca’s pressure and ultimately watched its chances disappear after two costly red cards.
Toluca, meanwhile, keeps marching.
The Diablos are four games away from potentially lifting the Leagues Cup trophy — and after their performance in New Jersey, they have every reason to believe they belong in the conversation.
