Toluca didn’t need to dominate the ball or create the most chances. The Diablos simply needed to make theirs count.
They did exactly that.
Toluca defeated Monterrey 2-0 at Shell Energy Stadium to capture the 2026 Leagues Cup, turning a night of sustained Rayados pressure into a historic championship for the Diablos.
Monterrey generated much of the early danger, but Toluca struck first and never surrendered its advantage. Alexis Vega opened the scoring after Federico Viñas’ shot hit the post, reacting quickest to the rebound and finishing into an open net.
Rayados continued to push, with Lucas Ocampos, Hugo Cuypers and Ricardo Chávez all coming close, but Toluca goalkeeper Hugo González repeatedly answered the call. González’s one-handed stop on Chávez in the 31st minute was among the night’s biggest saves.
Toluca entered halftime with a 1-0 lead despite Monterrey creating more of the attacking pressure.
The second half followed a similar script. Monterrey controlled possession and attempted to stretch Toluca with crosses and quick combinations, while the Diablos remained compact and waited for their chance to counter.
That patience paid off in the 70th minute.
Franco Romero carried the ball forward before finding Viñas on the left. Viñas drove into the box and forced Esteban Andrada into another save, but the rebound fell to Helinho, who calmly finished with his left foot to double Toluca’s advantage.
Monterrey continued searching for a way back. Ocampos headed a Jesús Corona corner wide in the 82nd minute, while Luca Orellano sent a late free kick over the crossbar.
But Toluca’s defense held firm through six minutes of stoppage time, closing out the 2-0 victory and securing the club’s first Leagues Cup championship.
Helinho was named Player of the Match, while Vega was recognized as the tournament’s Best Player after another influential performance.
For Toluca, the victory represents more than another trophy. The Diablos became the third Mexican club to win the Leagues Cup, following León and Cruz Azul, and the first Liga MX club to win the modern edition of the tournament.
The championship also adds another chapter to an extraordinary run under manager Antonio Mohamed. The Leagues Cup title is his sixth championship with Toluca, joining the Clausura 2025, Campeón de Campeones 2025, Campeones Cup 2025, Apertura 2025 and 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.
“It’s a huge joy to be part of the club’s history. But this continues,” Mohamed said. “We must keep working. The team gives everything on the field.”
Vega also credited Mohamed for his development and the trust he showed by giving him the captain’s armband.
“He’s the best coach. I’ve told you that before—he’s the best in Mexico,” Vega said.
Toluca’s tournament was built on defensive discipline as much as attacking efficiency. The Diablos conceded just two goals throughout the entire competition, while Helinho and Viñas now lead the club with five goals each this semester.
For Monterrey, the defeat was a frustrating reminder that possession and pressure don’t always translate into goals. Rayados created opportunities throughout the night but couldn’t find the finishing touch when it mattered most.
Toluca could.
And now the Diablos are Leagues Cup champions.
