No. 10 Vanderbilt pushed defending national champion No. 19 Florida to the brink Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium, but a late three-pointer proved to be the difference as the Commodores fell 98–94 in a tightly contested SEC showdown.
Vanderbilt (16–2, 3–2 SEC) matched Florida possession for possession in front of a packed and energetic home crowd, trading leads repeatedly in a physical second half that featured seven lead changes and four ties in the final 10 minutes. Despite strong execution and efficient shooting, the Commodores came up just short in the closing seconds.
Tyler Tanner led Vanderbilt with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, adding five assists and serving as a steady offensive presence throughout the game. Duke Miles and AK Okereke each contributed 15 points, while Tyler Nickel and Jalen Washington added 14 apiece. Vanderbilt finished with five players in double figures and turned the ball over just four times.
After falling behind early, the Commodores responded with a strong first-half rally. Florida used a 17–2 run to build a double-digit lead, but Vanderbilt clawed back behind defensive pressure and effective pick-and-roll action. Washington’s offensive rebound and buzzer-beating jumper sent Vanderbilt into halftime with a 45–44 advantage.
The second half became increasingly physical as both teams battled inside and from the perimeter. Vanderbilt briefly seized momentum midway through the half and again late, highlighted by timely baskets from Tanner, Nickel, and Washington. With the score tied in the final minutes, Florida’s Xaivian Lee knocked down a deep step-back three with 45 seconds remaining to regain the lead.
The Commodores had chances down the stretch, but Florida sealed the game at the free-throw line. Vanderbilt was undone primarily on the glass, as the Gators held a 40–26 rebounding advantage and outscored the Commodores 22–8 on second-chance points—key margins in an otherwise evenly played game.
Despite the result, Vanderbilt demonstrated its ability to compete with the nation’s best, delivering a high-level performance in its second ranked matchup in a week. The Commodores now turn their attention to the road as SEC play continues.
