CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (November 2, 2026) – The Virginia Cavaliers women’s basketball team opened the 2026-27 season in commanding fashion Monday evening, cruising to an 87-45 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. Virginia wasted little time establishing control, using a strong offensive performance and defensive pressure to overwhelm the visiting Hawks and begin the new campaign with a convincing 42-point win.
The Cavaliers set the tone early, building a comfortable 43-19 advantage by halftime. Virginia’s ability to control the pace and limit Maryland Eastern Shore’s scoring opportunities kept the Hawks from finding any consistent offensive rhythm. Despite committing 17 turnovers, the Cavaliers maintained a commanding lead throughout the contest, showcasing the kind of energy and intensity they hope to carry into the remainder of the season.
Virginia continued to dictate the action after the break, adding another 44 points in the second half while holding Maryland Eastern Shore to just 26. The Cavaliers’ balanced performance on both ends of the floor allowed them to maintain control without giving the Hawks an opportunity to mount a serious comeback.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 1-0 and begins its 2026-27 campaign on a positive note. While the season opener revealed some areas for improvement, particularly ball security, the Cavaliers delivered an encouraging performance as they look to build momentum and establish themselves as a competitive force in the ACC.
