WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Spirit are headed back to the postseason for the third consecutive year after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over rival Gotham FC on Saturday afternoon. Defender Lucia Di Guglielmo delivered the decisive moment in the 70th minute, scoring her first goal for Washington and helping the Spirit punch their ticket to the 2026 NWSL Playoffs.
With playoff positioning on the line, Washington came out aggressively, controlling possession and creating early scoring opportunities. Trinity Rodman nearly put the Spirit ahead in the third minute when she connected with Clara Luvanga, whose attempt sailed just wide.
The Spirit continued applying pressure throughout the opening half, with Rodman, Hal Hershfelt and Leicy Santos orchestrating attacks through the midfield. Sofia Cantore also created opportunities down the right flank, but Gotham’s defense held firm.
One of Washington’s best first-half chances came in the 43rd minute when Cantore delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Rodman connected with a header toward the far post, forcing Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger into a diving save to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
Washington finally broke through in the 70th minute. Second-half substitute Mélissa Bethi delivered a ball into the penalty area, where Di Guglielmo controlled it and calmly finished to give the Spirit a 1-0 advantage.
The Spirit nearly doubled their lead just two minutes later when Bethi unleashed a shot that struck the crossbar.
Defensively, Washington remained composed down the stretch. Goalkeeper Sandy MacIver and the Spirit back line limited Gotham’s opportunities, while Tara Rudd helped shut down several dangerous attacking runs.
Even as Gotham pushed for a late equalizer, Washington successfully defended a free kick and corner kick in the closing minutes before holding on through stoppage time to secure the clean sheet.
The victory officially secured Washington’s third straight NWSL playoff appearance and temporarily moved the Spirit into second place in the league standings. Depending on results elsewhere around the league, Washington could also secure home-field advantage for its quarterfinal matchup.
The Spirit now turn their attention to a challenging road contest against the Kansas City Current on Sunday, October 25, at 5 p.m. ET, their final away match of the 2026 regular season.
With the postseason approaching, Washington is finding ways to win when it matters most, and Saturday’s performance demonstrated the defensive discipline and timely finishing that could make the Spirit a dangerous opponent in November.
