The Washington Spirit tightened their grip on first place in the NWSL standings Sunday night, defeating expansion side Denver Summit FC 1-0 before a lively crowd of 15,169 at Audi Field. The victory pushed Washington to 33 points through 16 matches, extending its advantage atop the league table to two points.
The Spirit looked dangerous from the opening whistle, with Trinity Rodman immediately putting Denver’s back line under pressure. The U.S. international weaved past defenders early but couldn’t keep her shot on target. Denver nearly answered in the 12th minute when Yazmeen Ryan unleashed a strike from outside the penalty area that sailed just over the crossbar.
Both clubs exchanged opportunities throughout a competitive first half, but neither could find the breakthrough. Paige Metayer, making a rare start in an attacking role, nearly gave Washington the lead late in the opening period, forcing Denver goalkeeper Abby Smith into a sharp save inside the box.
After 135 scoreless minutes in the inaugural season series between the clubs, the deadlock was finally broken in spectacular fashion.
Washington’s breakthrough came in the 61st minute following another brilliant sequence from Rodman. After Leicy Santos won possession deep in the Spirit’s defensive half, she quickly released Rodman down the left flank. Rodman drove forward before finding Sofia Cantore in stride, and the Italian forward unleashed a thunderous long-range strike that crashed off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
The goal was Cantore’s eighth of the NWSL season and her fourth from outside the penalty area since joining Washington last August, further cementing her reputation as one of the league’s most dangerous finishers from distance.
Denver threatened to equalize midway through the second half when Lindsey Heaps appeared to win a penalty after going down inside the area. However, after a VAR review, the referee overturned the decision, allowing the Spirit to maintain their slim advantage.
Head coach Jonatan Giráldez turned to his bench in the closing stages, bringing on Élisabeth Tsé and Claudia Martínez to help preserve the lead. The visitors mounted one final surge in stoppage time, peppering Washington’s goal with multiple attempts, including a shot that rattled the crossbar.
Goalkeeper Sandy MacIver and the Spirit defense refused to break, standing firm under heavy late pressure to record the club’s seventh clean sheet of the regular season.
The victory marked Washington’s 10th win in its last 12 league matches, continuing one of the hottest stretches in the NWSL and reinforcing the Spirit’s status as a leading contender in the race for the 2026 NWSL Shield.
Washington now heads west for a midweek showdown with Utah Royals FC on Wednesday, July 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. EDT, with the match streaming on NWSL+.
