Director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s much-anticipated Amy Winehouse biopic, “Back to Black,” has unveiled its first official full-length trailer. Starring Marisa Abela of “Industry” fame as the late singer, the film chronicles Winehouse’s journey to global stardom, beginning with her upbringing in Camden and focusing on the creation of her seminal “Back to Black” album, which solidified her as an iconic figure and remains the highest-charting album by a British female artist in the U.S.

In a convincing portrayal, Abela as Winehouse declares, “I want people to hear my voice and just forget their troubles for five minutes.” She emphasizes her influences, stating, “Do you know what ‘girl power’ means to me? Sarah Vaughan, Lauryn Hill. You need to know this: I ain’t no Spice Girl.”

Told from Amy’s perspective and drawing inspiration from her deeply personal lyrics, the film delves into the multifaceted artist and the turbulent love story at the heart of one of music’s most legendary albums.

“I don’t write songs to be famous. I write songs because I’ve gotta make something good out of something bad,” asserts Winehouse in a poignant moment, signaling a cathartic conclusion to the trailer. Experience the captivating first glimpse of the film in the gallery above.

“Back to Black” also features Jack O’Connell as Winehouse’s ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. The film is slated to premiere in U.K. and Irish theaters on April 1, followed by a U.S. debut via Focus Features on May 17.
