Howard Homecoming Fashion Show “The Revival” Powered by Febreze

Howard University’s fashion scene stands out in a class of its own. When it comes to style and individuality, “U-Know” that Howard consistently earns a place on every fashion aficionado’s list. Simply strolling through the campus grounds, you’ll find everyone dressed to impress, regardless of the day. However, on a particular Thursday, necks were craned and heads turned. This wasn’t just any ordinary Thursday; it marked the annual Student Fashion Show at Howard.

The Fashion Show sets the stage for Howard’s Homecoming weekend each year, and the theme for this year was “Revival.” This theme emphasizes community, rekindling the pride associated with Howard, and rejuvenating the university’s essence to its former glory.

On that special Thursday, Cramton Auditorium was packed with eager spectators, all ready to witness the magic unfold on the runway. The showcased pieces transported the audience back to the vibrant fashion scene of 1990s New York, amplified by the audio department’s exceptional contributions that conjured memories of high tops and fades ruling the era. Notably, one designer drew inspiration from John Galliano’s iconic newspaper dress, crafting a men’s ready-to-wear two-piece ensemble paired with a bearskin and sleek black Timberland boots.

Howard’s Homecoming weekend isn’t exclusive to current students; it also draws a substantial number of alumni back to their cherished campus. This year, a recent Howard graduate, Rachel Motley, was invited to contribute to the fashion show and took the spotlight as one of the featured designers. Motley, who majored in Marketing during her time at Howard, has since evolved into a versatile multi-disciplinary artist now based in the bustling fashion hub of New York City. Post-graduation, her career has thrived, including collaborations with retail giant Walmart to create custom merchandise for the Rock the Bells Festival. She also stood out as a featured artist at the Black Art Matters Pop-Up festival earlier in the year. Notably, her latest endeavor involved a partnership with Febreze, resulting in the design of a “Fresh AF” (As Febreze) tracksuit. Febreze proudly sponsored this year’s Fashion Show, and Motley’s distinctive designs were showcased by Howard’s dance team during an electrifying intermission performance.
