Independiente Medellín twice held the advantage but was forced to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw against Brazil’s Vasco da Gama on Wednesday night in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana Round of 32 at Estadio Atanasio Girardot.
The result leaves the tie evenly poised heading into next week’s decisive second leg in Brazil, where a place in the Round of 16 will be on the line.
The match also marked the managerial debut of Luis Amaranto Perea, whose side delivered an energetic performance and created several dangerous chances throughout the evening.
After applying pressure for much of the opening half, Medellín finally broke through in first-half stoppage time. Yony González delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area, where John Montaño calmly finished to give DIM a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Vasco da Gama wasted little time responding after halftime. Just minutes into the second half, an unfortunate own goal by Joaquín Varela leveled the score at 1-1, shifting the momentum back toward the visitors.
Medellín continued to attack and regained the lead in the 72nd minute. Montaño fired a shot that deflected off defender Carlos Cuesta before finding the back of the net. While there was initial uncertainty over whether the goal would be credited as an own goal, CONMEBOL ultimately awarded it to Montaño, ruling that his original effort was on target.
With victory seemingly within reach, Vasco da Gama found a late response. In the 86th minute, Cuiabano delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, where Claudio Spinelli met it first time to beat the goalkeeper and level the match at 2-2.
Although Medellín will be disappointed not to carry a lead into the return leg, Perea’s first match in charge offered plenty of positives. DIM showed attacking intent, controlled long stretches of the contest, and proved capable of matching one of Brazil’s traditional powers.
The second leg in Brazil will determine which club advances to the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16, with everything still to play for after an entertaining first encounter in Medellín.

El resultado deja la eliminatoria igualada de cara al decisivo partido de vuelta la próxima semana en Brasil, donde se jugará un puesto en los octavos de final.
El partido también marcó el debut como entrenador de Luis Amaranto Perea, cuyo equipo ofreció una actuación enérgica y creó varias ocasiones de peligro a lo largo de la noche.
