Ohio State delivered its most complete performance of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating UCLA 86–74 at Value City Arena behind a career game from John Mobley Jr. The Buckeyes controlled the game from start to finish, never trailing while improving to 12–5 overall and 4–3 in Big Ten play.
Mobley Jr. was electric, scoring a career-high 28 points while knocking down six three-pointers. The sophomore guard also added three assists without committing a turnover, capping his first-half performance with a buzzer-beating three that sent Ohio State into halftime leading 42–36.
The Buckeyes opened the second half with a surge, ripping off a 12–0 run to extend the lead to 50–36 and force an early UCLA timeout. Strong defense and efficient offense continued to fuel Ohio State, which pushed the margin as high as 19 points midway through the half and answered every Bruins run down the stretch.
Devin Royal recorded 22 points and nine rebounds, while Bruce Thornton added 21 points and eight rebounds, giving Ohio State three 20-point scorers in the win. The Buckeyes shot over 53 percent from the field, went 21-for-25 from the free-throw line, and held a 37–27 rebounding advantage.
UCLA was led by Tyler Bilodeau, who finished with 30 points, but the Bruins were unable to overcome Ohio State’s balanced attack and sustained pressure. Even as UCLA trimmed the deficit late, the Buckeyes remained composed and closed out their biggest victory of the season
