Time marches on yet Trae Tha Truth has never wavered from his commitment to the underserved kids of Houston. Despite the threat of inclement weather, the fourth annual Trae Day, hosted by the rapper’s non-profit Angels By Nature/A Better Neighborhood, went on without a hitch Friday (July 22). Held in the parking lot of the Houston Independent School District’s Delmar Stadium, the event offered the hundreds of kids in attendance free giveaways, immunization services, backpacks filled with school supplies and uniforms, and three different moonwalks to explore: the Velcro wall, the hoop shot and the obstacle course.
Then there was the free music. Trae served up a brief set of heat rocks from his discography including “In the Hood,†“Grey Cassette†and “Pop Trunk Wave.†Several celebrity friends also performed including Rich Boy, 2 Chainz, Lil Duval, Don Cannon, Lola Monroe and Lupe Fiasco, who ran through “Out of My Head†and “The Show Goes On.†Trae was also flanked by fallen UGK rapper/producer Pimp C’s mother, Mama C, and Bun B.
“Trae Day is and has always been about Trae wanting to give back to the community,†Bun B told MTV News. “I think we should acknowledge the fact that someone wants to give back to their community. Trae is not the only person from Houston who has gained from the benefit of the community so we have to definitely honor someone who takes the initiative to give back to his people. And we also have to honor the city of Houston for recognizing and acknowledging him for what he’s done for the community.â€
Before the concert, Trae was presented with a certificate of recognition from Houston City Councilwoman Yolanda Adams and a proclamation from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) for his continued humanitarian efforts supporting the greater Houston community.
“It’s a beautiful thing for the community,†Lupe told MTV News. “Trae has always been a dude with a good heart that represents the streets of Houston—both sides of it, not just the gangsta side, but also the normal, regular side of it. And he’s doing something for the kids. I’m down with that in any way, shape, or form no matter who is doing it.â€
Although it rained briefly at the start of the event, it was clear skies the rest of the way and everyone stayed until the police literally had to stop Trae from performing to clear out the school grounds at the agreed upon time…. Maurice Bobb
