Washington Mystics Rally Past Sparks to Secure First 20-Win Season Since 2022

The Washington Mystics reached another milestone Saturday night, rallying past the Los Angeles Sparks to secure their 20th win of the season and their first 20-win campaign since 2022.

Washington trailed 58-55 entering the fourth quarter but flipped the game when it mattered most, outscoring Los Angeles 25-12 in the final period. The comeback marked the Mystics’ WNBA-leading eighth fourth-quarter comeback of the season.

The Mystics dominated the interior throughout the night, scoring 60 points in the paint — the second-highest total in franchise history — while controlling the boards 43-27.

Sonia Citron led Washington with 21 points, six rebounds, a career-high-tying eight assists and two steals. She also knocked down four of five attempts from three-point range, recording the first 20-point, five-rebound and five-assist game of her career.

Shakira Austin added 17 points and 11 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season while recording her 1,000th career rebound. She also extended her franchise-record streak of games with at least 15 points and five rebounds to 14 consecutive games.

Kiki Iriafen chipped in 19 points on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting, along with eight rebounds, two steals and a block.

Washington’s depth also played a role, with Lauren Betts contributing eight points, five rebounds and two blocks off the bench, while Cotie McMahon grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.

After falling behind by as many as nine points in the third quarter, the Mystics found another gear in the fourth and closed out the comeback to reach the 20-win mark.

Washington will look to build on the momentum Wednesday when it hosts the Toronto Tempo at 7:30 p.m. ET for “Ready for School” Night at CareFirst Arena.
