From Redemption to Dominance: Blakes Shines in Tournament Opener

Mikayla Blakes delivered yet another dominant performance, scoring 30 points to lead Vanderbilt Commodores women’s basketball to a commanding 102–61 win over High Point Panthers women’s basketball in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Remarkably, Blakes didn’t even realize she had reached 30 points—or that it marked her 13th 30-point game of the season and a new school single-season scoring record. Her focus remained solely on winning and helping her team advance.

Teammates praised her consistency and humility, noting that such performances have become routine for her. After last year’s early tournament exit, Blakes was especially motivated to lead her team further this season, calling the win a personal redemption.

Vanderbilt’s success wasn’t hers alone. Aubrey Galvan added 17 points, while Sacha Washington and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda each recorded double-doubles. The team dominated the boards and showcased its depth.

Looking ahead, Vanderbilt faces a tougher challenge against Illinois Fighting Illini women’s basketball in the next round. While the competition will intensify, Blakes has already proven she can score against any defense, solidifying her reputation as a standout, potentially generational talent.
